Summer is finally over time to move to the big city. Things are looking up, lots of shows to go to and DJs to go see (if I can justify going to clubs alone) and hopefully a new job that will keep me in the freshest of gear. I should get into a normal routine in the next few weeks so I am gonna try to keep this thing half interesting for the maybe one or two people who read it. Anyways here is a Jam until then.

I was super bummed when i saw this tape on turntablelab.com because i had just made an order. But the kind fellas have offered the mix as a free download which had me stoked to no ends. Catchdub says "We wanted to do a rock mix that wasn't the perrenial joints you always hear out, or the most achingly new blog music - just a cool spectrum of tracks we mess with." It's a fine enough mix some stuff I'm a bit bored with but it stays in the good books by reminding me of how awesome Tones on Tail are.

ZZT is the new collab between Tiga and Zombie Nation. I only really came across it due to the flip of new single having a Justice remix but the original is nice too. Their first single Lower State of Consciousness is out now on Turbo. I found this video on youtube, I'm not sure if it's official but I am sure that bugs are creepy close up.

New Kanye-Barry Bonds

Kanye is trying to up the ante in the Sept. 11 battle for sales with 50. This new song featuring Lil Wayne (who is on every song anyway) leaked out today, maybe Kanye is worried and trying to pad the album a bit. I mean 50 has already released (or had leaked) 4 songs from his album and had his wig pushed back multiple times till resting on Sept. 11. So it'll be interesting to see who sells more, not that anyone really buys albums anyway, but 50 said he won't put out anymore albums if Kanye sells more so that reason enough to root for kanye.

Tony Wilson

Tony Wilson passed away recently after battling kidney cancer. Tony founded factory records and helped release a lot of music that has had a huge part in shaping my musical taste. Through Peter Savilles graphic design, assiging a FAC nuber to everything (including posters and buildings) and Martin Hannet's production on most of the early releases factory records developed a look and sound that helped set them apart from the more typical punk acts of the time. If you're familiar with Madlib at all you know he's not flipping the same James Brown or Al Green samples as everyone else. Hate or love his production his chioce of samples is pretty interesting. Madlib used this particular sample twice first on the J Dilla collabo "No Games" from the album Champion sound. And again for "One Beer" which was originally an extra from the Madvillain album but was used again by MF Doom on MM...Food. The sample comes from the spaced out french Jazz of "Huit Octobre 1971" by Cortex. Madlib doesn't chop up the sample too much, pretty much just looping the vocal and drum break part, and using the weird synth part.

Daft Punk's Electroma is hit and miss (mostly miss) but the final scene almost redeems the whole movie. Set to Jackson C. Frank's "Dialogue" it's the perfect combo of film and music.

Solo New Edition

More than most put together pop groups the members of New Edition (Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky (my favorite) Mike and Ralph) all found some level of success when the ground broke up.

Bobby Brown was the first to leave the group (he was replaced by johnny Gill) in !986 releasing the album "King of Stage" but it wasn't untill 1988s "Don't Be Cruel" that things really took off. The big single from that album was my perogative but my favorite single by far is Every Little Step. There is something about a stand alone drum machine that pops and sounds better than when everything is computer generated.

The next former New Edition members to go solo did so as a group. Bel Biv Devoe was Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie Devoe, they came out of the gate big with the Kool G. Rap sampling "Poison". This was the summertime jam to bang in your jeep in 1990. The part where it breaks down and Ricky is singing is as good as it gets. And other than providing the hot jamz Bel Biv Devoe use their musical platform to offer advice, according to them "never trust a big butt and a smile" words to live by.

The Last to go solo and the least prolific of all the New Edition members was Ralph Tresvant. Ralph was the lead singer in New Edition and therefore was probably most identified with the group, and although he waited the longest to release solo material he made the right moves. Hooking up with the hit factory that was Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was a good move and the partnership produced "sensitivity" the best in my opinion of any New Edition solo release. Sensitivity is more of a pure pop song than the others above and relies less on New Jack Swing's R&B/Hip-Hop than Bobby Brown or Bel Biv Devoe.

One of my favorite aspects of rap production is the use of samples. I love seeing how a producer can flip a sample and chop it up until its something totally new, or just use the sample in a new context and give the original new life. Pullin' me back was the firts single from Chingy's 2006 album Hoodstar. I was never a very big fan of Chingy or Tyreese who sings the hook but for like 3 weeks they played the video every night on Rapcity and i sort of started to like it. Around the same time i was reading the internets and came across an article about crazy jazz musician Jaco Pastorius. I decided to check out his self titled firts album. The first track I listened to was Portrait of Tracy. Jaco was a crazy good bass player and supposedly this song is super hard to play or something, but the first thing i noticed was a strong similarity to the Chingy track I'd been hearing so much lately. Sure enough it turns out Jermaine Dupri used Jaco's "Portrait of Tracy" and the basis for Chingy's "Pullin me Back". Very surprising to me because as a rule Dupri sucks, he's still spending Kriss Kross money.

I saw the Jaco Pastorius LP last xmas in a record store in Toronto, I totally wanted to buy it but it was 30 bucks. It had a sticker on it "used for multiple Hip-Hop samples" i guess thats the kind of LP you need to find for 50 cents at the thrift store.

Miami Horror

I don't kow much about Miami Horror other than he is a dj/producer from Austrailia, but he brings the jamz. Nothing really that new, sort of discovery era Daft Punk with some 80's prince thrown in too. When I hear it I totally feel like I am on a speedboat with Crockett & Tubbs. Anyone who pays attention to the internets knows already that the new M.I.A. album Kala has leaked. I was actually looking forward to this one, I Liked arular for a little while but it wore thin. Galang is still a standard jam though. Supposedly some of the early leaks were missing a track called paper planes. I went back to get the extra track and it seemed instantly familiar as soon as it started playing. I go back and listen to Straight to Hell by The clash and sure enough someones been sample digging. Not like you have to dig very far in a crate to find a copy of Combat Rock. I don't know who produced the M.I.A. song but i'll get behind it for the clash sample and the liberal use of gunshot sound effects.

Watch My Feet is the first single from Chicago's Dude N Nem. It pretty much keeps with the new Hip Hop formula, if you want a hit make up a dance that goes with the song. Difference is this one is fun. Plus their shirts say shirt. Excellent.

Due to financial constraints i missed out on the summer collection new eras. It's a shame cause they had some real nice ones, but these new ones which should be in the fall collection are perfect. Clean hats not too busy classic 10 Deep X logo and the brass knuckles. I won't be sleeping on these.

The first i ever heard about Dabaaz was in a turntable lab newsletter a few weeks back. They Recommend his new 12" Tu Veux La Guerre ? b/w Regarde Les. Although I'm not big on non english rap in general, but France has been good me this year. And knowing that Regarde Les had a Clipse sample and was produced by A-Trak was reason enough to at least give it a listen. Glad I did too, though i still don't know half of what he is going on with outside of hearing him say club, le sex or girls. "Moi, Ma Gueule & Ma Propre Personne" is Dabaaz's new album and contains both of the above mentioned tracks, and is quite solid as well. It has a nice mix of new stlye electro beats, dirty south synths and classic mpc chopped samples, everything i like in a beat.

Trackademicks is a bay area producer probably best know for his remix of E-40's Hyphy anthem "tell me when to go" but i've been enjoying this track for quite a while. On "Grocery Bill" Jason "Trackademicks" Valerio shows just like Pharrell and Kanye, that just cause you produce the track doesn't mean you can't jump on it too. The song also features Josie Stingray i like her on this track and hope to hear more from her in the future. Plus she works Kid Robot and the hundreds into her verses whats not to like about that?

Wale (wa-lay) toally has to be my new favorite MC. I first heard of him from either Mark Ronson's or Catchdubs radio show. Either way for me he has the pefrfect mix of party jams and rapping skillz. Last week his mixtape 100 Miles and Running dropped on the internets offered as a free download which is the norm in post Drama RIAA raid times. The tape is a good mix of some orignal productions and some hot freestyles over beats from Gorrillaz and everyones favorite french boys justice. Plus he is totally up on streetwear. His shoe collection is supposed to be sick, and there are shout outs to the hundreds, 10 Deep, BAPE and Commonwealth all over this thing. Plus its mixed by Catchdubs so you can't go wrong.

Human Nature

Like Michael Jackson or not Thriller was a massive album. Seven of its nine tracks broke the top ten and it sold somthing like 40 million copies. That is serious. My favorite song by far from that album is Human Nature. It was the fifth of the seven singles released and one of the only ones to not have a video. Despite this it still reached #7 on the billboard hot 100 in 1983. It has always been my favorite song from thriller.

I was a little young when thriller came out but being the massive album it was I managed to hear it a few times as i was growing up. So in 1992 being a faithfull weekend top 40 countdown listener I recognized a familar melody to this SWV (Sistas With Voices) track Right Here.

And once more the song decided to pop up. This time on what the internet considers to be the best rap album of all time. Illmatic was Nas' first album released in 1994, and its final song "It Ain't Hard to Tell" also make use of Michael Jackons "Human Nature" but in a more subtle way. Produced by the ever great Large Professor it is my favorite song on one of my favorite albums.
